Ever since last week's beautiful New York Times story, we have received a lot of buzz about our new Digital Collections site and over 350 people have now created accounts! But there's still some confusion about what it is and what it isn't. We will be posting a lot about this in the coming weeks and months but here's a few quick notes to help you get started!

*Anyone can search for anything without an account but to get the full experience of listening to audio and watching videos, create an account!

*Please note that EVERYTHING on the site is watermarked, including all photos, videos and documents, as well as audio, which have beeps every 30 seconds. Please remember, this site is for reference purposes, not for commercial purposes. We are not selling the audio of Louis Armstrong's tapes and you can't download or request copies of the videos for your hard drive. But as long as you're logged in and don't mind the watermark, you'll have just as much access to everything that you would get if you visited our Research Collections at Queens College!

*Having said that, if you are making a documentary or writing a book, you can use the "Add to Basket" function, make a formal request and explain what you need it. We will share our fee schedule if we can provide the rights to an item, but not, we will reject it. Requests for orders are coming in and because of our small staff and the holiday weekend, we are behind but scanning through the requests, many will be rejected because they are for audio and video that can be enjoyed through the site.

*For paper documents, we have limited it to making the first 10 pages available on the website. You can use the "Add to Basket" function to request longer documents but again, sometimes we will only be able to provide a watermarked PDF for research purposes. If extra scanning is needed, there will be a charge.

*And for the first time, you will be allowed to purchase photos for personal use, granted that the Louis Armstrong House Museum owns the rights (such as the Jack Bradley Collection) or if we don't know who the photographer is. In some cases (photos by Burt Goldblatt or Paul Studer for example, we will send you to the appropriate parties who control the use of those photos for purchase, but you can still see the watermarked versions on our site).

*Definitely try to take advantage of the Advanced Search function as it can really help you find exactly what you're looking for or you can group fun things such as videos of Louis on television and then just relax and spend a few hours watching Pops in action!

*Lastly, we are still adding material to the site and we're still catching errors and making changes. It's a work in process and we're doing our best to keep it up to date but if you see something wrong, don't hesitate to let us know!
